A handful of countries implement Sharia law as the foundation of their entire legal system, including Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan (under Taliban control), Yemen, Sudan, Mauritania, and parts of Somalia, Pakistan, and Brunei.

Other countries like Nigeria, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the United Arab Emirates apply Sharia law only in certain regions or for specific matters (mainly family law) or only for Muslims, while many more—such as Egypt, Morocco, and Jordan—have mixed systems where Sharia influences some aspects of the law but does not govern the entire legal code.

In some secular countries with Muslim minorities (like the UK, India, or Kenya), Sharia courts or principles are used voluntarily by Muslims for personal matters such as marriage, divorce, or inheritance, but do not replace national law.

The degree and interpretation of Sharia law vary widely, from strict criminal codes to limited application in family or personal status law, depending on the country and its legal traditions.
