Extreme weather events like heavy rain and flooding have definitely become more frequent in the past decade, both in the US and globally, and climate change is a major driver behind this trend.

For example, in the US, the average number of billion-dollar weather disasters per year jumped from X (1980–2024 average) to XX in just the last five years, and nine of the ten years with the most disasters have happened in the past decade.

Heavy rainfall events, especially in the Northeast, have increased in both frequency and intensity, with the most intense storms dropping XX% more rain now than in the late 1950s.

Scientists expect these trends to keep accelerating as the planet warms and the atmosphere holds more moisture, fueling even more extreme downpours and flooding.
