We were very close, and her passing hit me hard. She wasn’t a golfer, but she was a sports fan, and she always asked how my golf game was doing, and I loved sharing my golf stories with her. She was superstitious, especially when it came to numbers. Two of her favorites were XX and X. After she passed, I didn’t touch a club for over a month. In my first round back, I hit a good drive on the first hole and had XX yards to the flag. I smiled as I pulled my wedge. The second shot finished pin high and just a bit right. When I paced it off, it was X feet. I took the ball out of play after the hole and still have it today. I was wiping tears from my eyes until nearly the third green. Maybe it was just a strange coincidence. But I like to think she was still checking in on my golf game and letting me know she was doing okay. This still chokes me up a bit every time I think about it. In a strange way, this is my favorite golf memory.
