Some of you may remember back in the day when at the supermarket checkout line there would be these sensationalistic tabloids for sale with the most outrageous headlines and stories. ("Batboy," anyone?)

The National Enquirer was the most well known of the genre, and while it did occasionally break really important stories that were true, it was mostly wrong in everything else it published.

So basically these tabloids had the following strategy:

X. Get your product where everybody sees it.
X. Put out incredibly sensationalistic, exploitive headlines to attract sales to the gullible and the curious.
X. Be right occasionally so you can point to the X times you were right and not the XXX times you were wrong.
X. Never issue a retraction.
X. Profit.

I've come to realize that we have an infestation of so-called "MAGA Influencers" on X who have adopted the exact same business model.
