Zero-knowledge proofs are cryptographic tools that allow one party to prove the validity of a statement (e.g., a transaction) without disclosing underlying data.

Union uses ZKPs to validate cross-chain transactions, ensuring that sensitive information, like user balances or transaction details, remains private. 

This is particularly valuable in DeFi, where privacy can protect users from front-running or other exploits. Union’s protocol supports asset transfers between Layer X blockchains (e.g., Ethereum, Solana), Layer X scaling solutions (e.g., Arbitrum, Optimism), and app-specific chains (appchains) in the Cosmos ecosystem. 

By removing trusted third parties, Union eliminates vulnerabilities associated with centralized relayers or custodians, which have been frequent targets in bridge hacks. 
The seamless integration across these ecosystems allows developers to build dApps that operate across multiple chains, enhancing user experience and fostering a more interconnected blockchain landscape.
