All of these wine farms are still in operation today after more than XXX years. On my father's side, the patriarch, Karl Friedrich, was a mercenary from Austria holding the rank of Oberst (equivalent to Colonel), hired to protect Dutch trade ships. He chose to stay in South Africa and bought land to farm grain in the Caledon District in the 17th century. I have never met a "Boer" who couldn't trace their family origins on at least one side.
