The logo was designed by a guy who was living in the Ethereum house in Zug briefly in 2014.  I think he was a carpenter or at least made some furniture -- there was a giant table in the house, so maybe he made that. 

I only heard the sigma reference recently and I think it is a stretch to assume that the sigma symbol Σ was the inspiration.
