While this may be more possible in Europe (due to lacking infrastructure in the US), this is not a very popular form of travel here either. Most of the trips of that size are done by plane, like in the US. All other things are road trips and multi-day train rides. Nobody is "enforcing" that here. Car infrastructure is superb. It's just that we can use the alternative once in a while, while you mostly can't.
