At age 10, American schoolgirl Samantha Smith became a Cold War peace symbol after writing to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov in 1982, asking why the U.S. and USSR were enemies. 

Andropov replied personally, assuring her of peaceful intentions and invited her to visit Moscow.

In July 1983, Smith visited the USSR with her parents, touring Moscow, meeting local children, and speaking to the press and became a goodwill ambassador between two rival superpowers.
