China Readout of Wang Yi-Jaishankar Talks

On July 14, 2025, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, held talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Beijing. Wang Yi stated that the current profound changes in the international landscape, coupled with unilateral protectionism and hegemonic bullying, pose severe challenges to the world. As neighboring ancient Eastern civilizations and major emerging economies, the essence of China-India relations lies in peaceful coexistence and mutual success. Last year, the meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kazan reached important consensus, providing direction for improving and developing bilateral ties. Both sides should aim high, plan for the long term, adhere to the path of good-neighborly friendship, achieve the "Dragon-Elephant Dance," and find a way of mutual respect, trust, peaceful coexistence, cooperative development, and win-win outcomes. Wang Yi noted that 2025 marks the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic ties, and the momentum of improving bilateral relations is hard-won and worth cherishing. The relationship has its own historical logic and intrinsic momentum, is not aimed at any third party, and should not be disrupted by third-party interference. Both sides should trust rather than suspect each other, cooperate rather than compete, and achieve rather than undermine each other. China is willing to work with India to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders, reflect the strategic vision of major developing countries, consistently enhance political mutual trust, expand exchanges and cooperation, address differences and disputes from a broader perspective, and strengthen coordination within multilateral frameworks like the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to promote the sustained, healthy, and stable development of China-India relations. Wang Yi said that President Xi Jinping’s vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind aligns with Prime Minister Modi’s concept of "One World, One Family." Both countries support multilateralism and aspire to a more just and equitable international order. China is ready to strengthen communication and coordination with India to uphold the multilateral trading system, ensure the stability of global supply chains, and promote an open and cooperative international environment. Together, they can advance an equal and orderly multipolar world and inclusive economic globalization that benefits all, while safeguarding the common interests of the Global South and promoting regional peace, stability, and prosperity. Jaishankar stated that the Kazan meeting between the two leaders provided important guidance for India-China relations, with exchanges and cooperation in various fields returning to normal. He expressed gratitude to China for facilitating Indian pilgrims’ visits to the holy mountain and lake in Tibet. India views China as a development partner, not a competitor, and is willing to approach bilateral relations from a long-term perspective. Taking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties as an opportunity, India seeks to focus on shared interests, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, enhance people-to-people exchanges, and jointly maintain peace and tranquility in border areas. Both sides should strive to accumulate positive factors in bilateral relations, prevent differences from escalating into disputes, and avoid competition turning into conflict. As important neighbors, populous nations, and major global economies, India-China relations have regional and global significance. India adheres to strategic autonomy and an independent foreign policy, and is willing to strengthen coordination with China in multilateral settings to promote a multipolar world. India fully supports China’s role as the rotating chair of the SCO in hosting a successful summit.
