A navy friend told me this story. This was pre-Putin. They were in a “dry bar” (no alcohol) in some foreign port and got friendly with some Russian sailors. One of them pulled out a canteen with a clear liquid and poured a finger into everyone’s glass.

“What’s that?” Asks my friend.

“Is distilled.”

Friend: “From what?”

“Good not to know.”

Friend: “You make moonshine on your ship?!”

“Is Russian ship. Every Russian ship has engineer who knows how to make fermentation.”

And with that, they drank. Probably took a year off his life.
