Malta Blocks 18th EU Sanctions Package Against Russia, Slovakia Signals Readiness to Back Down — Politico

Malta has joined efforts to block the EU’s 18th sanctions package against Russia, opposing the proposed cut to the oil price cap due to concerns over the interests of its tanker fleet, Politico reports.

Slovakia, which had also resisted the package, may support it as early as Tuesday. Prime Minister Robert Fico is seeking prior agreements to soften the impact of the proposed ban on Russian gas imports.

The European Commission’s proposal calls for a complete phase-out of Russian gas and oil in the EU by the end of 2027.
