XX Years Later, Cameroon’s Despot Biya Still Thinks He’s the Future – And That Retirement is Overrated
Paul Biya, Cameroon’s 92-year-old president-for-life, has graciously offered to “serve” his people once more—by running for an 8th term in the October 2025 elections. Because apparently, XX years in power just isn’t enough.
Biya has ruled since 1982, making him Africa’s second-longest-serving leader after Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang, and the oldest head of state on Earth who isn’t a monarch. Born in 1933, he survived a coup in 1984 and has “won” seven elections—in 1984, 1988, 1992, 1997, 2004, 2011, and 2018—most marred by fraud allegations. His critics, usually silenced or jailed, have long decried corruption and stagnation.
Cameroon endured XX years of colonial rule. Biya seems determined to beat that number single-handedly. To do so, he’d need five more election victories—ruling until 2059, at the age of XXX. Impossible? Maybe. But don’t expect a handover anytime soon. Biya isn’t planning for the future—he’s trying to outrun it.
