The human rights group Marem sounded the alarm. At home, Laura was beaten, confined, and forced to hand over her earnings. Before escaping, she left a letter asking her relatives not to look for her. On July 13, Laura said that her family had found her. When a shelter worker arrived at her geolocation, he saw her surrounded by her sister and five Chechen men. They attacked him and took Laura away. The worker alerted the police. Later, Laura got in touch and said she was going to the police station “voluntarily,” allegedly to declare she was returning to Russia. But once at the station, she told officers she was staying in Georgia and would sign nothing. Early in the morning on July 14, Laura was moved to a secure location. Georgian police have launched an investigation to determine how her relatives managed to find her despite a protection order. Human rights defenders thanked the police for refusing to hand the woman over to her persecutors.
