Astronomers have discovered the fastest known star, S4714, orbiting near the Milky Way’s supermassive black hole, Sagittarius A*. It reaches speeds of XXXXXX km/s, enough to travel from Earth to the Moon in half a second. S4714 follows a highly elliptical orbit and may be a “squeezar”—a star stretched and heated by the black hole’s tidal forces. Detected with the Very Large Telescope, this and similar stars help scientists test Einstein’s general relativity and explore extreme gravitational environments.
