Police arrived before midnight and discovered James's body in the bathroom, bludgeoned beyond easy recognition, in a pool of blood. The scene was secured, and Thijssen was immediately identified as a suspect based on security footage and his recent relationship with the victim.

Thijssen vanished after the call. On October 26, police set up a second crime scene at the cliffside area after tracing his movements. They recovered his backpack and the hammer that afternoon. On October 27, at 12:15 p.m., divers found his body at the base of the cliffs; it was identified via fingerprints, and the death was ruled a suicide by jumping. No note was found, but an inquest in March 2025 confirmed the murder was premeditated.
