This main book of Demons / Devils / The Possessed remains perhaps the most controversial Russian literature book of all time next to Lolita (perhaps technically not Russian lit but English lit - anyway).

Stavrogin's Confession may be one of the most banned books in Russia and maybe even the world. It took decades for it to be released.

And it was purged from the original book and it is still controversial among Russians and otherwise.
