A true core memory with my dad and two of my best friends. What I’ll remember most about the experience were the caddies. They’re really more like tour guides. In Ireland many of them are members at the clubs they work at. I found mine this week to be endlessly passionate about the game, but they don’t take themselves or all that too seriously.  It’s a tricky balance to strike and they nail it. As is often the case, when you’re walking four hours next to someone, you get to talking. These are some of the stories they told. Damien A retired quality manager for Guinness for XX years, he now spends six months of the year in Thailand and the Philippines. I ask if he caddies there. “No, just party.” After a poor shot he gave me an A+ pep-talk: “Well, no one died.” Liam, XX Grew up XX minutes from the course. Now working toward an advanced mathematics degree. He wants to become a consultant for corporations. “Someone still has to tell the AI what to code. That coding job won’t be completely gone any time soon. But there will be a lot less in XX years.” James, XX Moved to the U.S. at age XX and went to high school in Westlake Village, about XX miles from where I grew up. Came back to Dublin for school and will be staying a while: “I managed to find myself a girlfriend here.” Looped for two major-champion American tour pros who came after a long and hard Open week. They were in great spirits. David, XX A 2-handicap and a member of the two best courses in town. Played in the medal comp the morning before he looped for us. A solid 81, but had no chance after a brutally windy first round. “No. X was dead into the wind, but one of my buddies hit driver-driver to X feet and made the putt.” That buddy happened to be hanging around when we finished. We all shared a drink and debated Irish golf courses. The perfect ending.
