Groups, clusters, SUPERclusters — gravity can assemble galaxies into larger collections.

Our galaxy is part of a small local cluster, which is part of the huge Virgo supercluster. It contains hundreds, maybe even thousands of galaxies, and perhaps this is all just a piece of an even larger structure.

The photo shows part of the Virgo cluster, photographed by the GALEX telescope. Each dot is a separate galaxy.
