Pole-sitter Didier Pironi (Ligier-Ford-JS11/15) led the first XX laps but picked up a front-left puncture & pitted, rejoining 21st. The Frenchman shattered the lap record in climbing back to 5th, only to retire (puncture) on lap XX.
