into space without a safety tether

On February 7, 1984, astronauts Bruce McCandless and Robert Lee Stewart first walked into space without a safety tether.

Instead, a Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) jetpack and an Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU) backpack with a life support system were attached to the spacesuit.

With the help of 24 nitrogen jet engines, the astronauts were able to move away from and approach the Challenger shuttle. Bruce McCandless was the first to walk into space, he moved away from the shuttle by 98 meters and returned back.
