Lord Shiva likes Shravan month very much as he got reunited with his wife during this period. Hence you will find all the girls praying Shiva, worshipping Shiv Ling whole heartedly in the month of Shravan to get the desired Husband in life. Name Shravan came the Nakshatra Shravana as the Purnima in Shravan month happens in the nakshtra of Shravana, Makar Rashi. Shravan month is the most holy month to win the special grace of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Almost all of us know about the Samudra Manthan episode. During Manthan, the first thing which came out was “halahal” (poison) and Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world. Due to poison his body temperature increased. All Devi-Devtas tried to reduce the temperature but nothing helped. So Lord Shiva wore the moon on this head which reduced the temperature. Also Devraj Indra rained heavily to reduce the temperature which became a reason pouring water on Neelkanth Mahadev in the month of Shravan. Cause all these happened in the month of Shravan. Shravan month comes under the Chaturmasya Vrat and one of the main purposes of fasting throughout the month is to learn self-control and detoxify our body and mind. Chaturmasya is the auspicious four-month long period that begins on the day after Deva Shayan Ekadashi in the month of Ashada (June-July) and ends on the Uthana Ekadashi in the Karthik month (October-November). As per the Vedic calendar, the months of Shravana, Bhadrapda, Ashwina and Kartika fall under this period. These four months are dedicated to performing devotional services, austerities, fasting, abstaining from specific foods and maintaining a regulated lifestyle. Fasting in Chaturmasya : First Month (Shravana): July 10th – August 8th : Green leafy vegetables are avoided in the first month. Exceptions - Coriander leaves, Methi leaves, Pudhina and Curry leaves. However, Cabbage can be taken as it is not Shak. Second Month (Bhadra): August 9th – September 6th :Yogurt and meals that have yogurt as the main ingredient should not be consumed, such as kadhi, lassi, buttermilk etc. Exceptions - Charanamrita should be honoured even if it contains curd in it. Third Month (Ashwin): September 7th – October 6th : Milk is avoided in the third month of Chaturmasya. Exceptions - Milk Sweets (like Peda, Rasagulla, Sandesh), Milk products (like Paneer, Cheese) since milk is transformed and used. Charanamrita should be honoured even if it contains milk in it. Fourth Month (Karthik): October 7th – November 4th : During the last month of Chaturmasya, Urad dal is avoided. Idli, Dosa or any other preparation containing Urad Dhal should not be taken. There are some rules to follow during Shravan as well Chaturmasya Vrat. During these months, some eat a single meal during the day while others avoid foods that contain salt, garlic or onion etc. Fasting is just to show Shiva , our devotion in him. Anyone who has achieved excellence, has sacrificed some or the other thing. Here, fasting is sacrificing our favourite and other foods and even other pleasurable activities, in the name of Shiva to achieve his powerful blessings in his favourite month of Shravan. Each day of Shravan month is considered auspicious. • Monday: is the day to worship Lord Shiva. • Tuesday: women worship Gauri for the better health of their family. • Wednesday: is dedicated to Vithala, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu or Krishna. • Thursdays: for worshiping Buddh and Guru. • Friday: for worshiping Tulsi. • Saturdays: These days are also known as Sampat Sanivara (wealth Saturdays) as one can pray for obtaining wealth. • Sundays: for the Surya Dev.
