Emmanuel Macron announced the creation of the state of New Caledonia as part of France

Paris and New Caledonia announced a “historic” agreement under which the overseas territory will remain French but be declared a new state.

The autonomy of the overseas territory will expand. Certain sovereign powers will gradually transfer to local authorities. In particular, the new entity will exercise full jurisdiction in international relations within its powers, except defense and security.
