Americans want stronger border enforcement, no asylum loophole, a path to citizenship for the undocumented, and continued high skilled legal immigration. They do not want "immigration as reparations for colonialism". They do not want benign neglect of the border. They do not want masked unaccountable ICE thugs tearing up communities. They do not want the government kicking out smart Indian people who don't fit some rightist's definition of "Western civilization". They want moderate reasonable classic American immigration policy, and no one is offering it to them, so they ping-pong back and forth between the parties.
