The paper reveals that peroxisomes act as "sinks" for mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (ROS) via membrane contacts, a process mediated by proteins like ACBD5 and PTPIP51, which increases during oxidative stress to maintain mitochondrial health. This supports my idea that the GOE (~2.4–2.1 billion years ago), when rising oxygen from cyanobacteria shifted redox dynamics, drove the evolution of such adaptive mechanisms to manage oxygen’s "Holocaust" effects. The ROS transfer likely emerged as a response to intensified mitochondrial ROS production, to create UPEs to alter physiology paralleling my thesis that nature embedded resilience by enhancing function via hypoxia (breath holds) and UV-A light (via neuropsin and melanin), into cellular design.
