President Donald Trump said he didn’t know who paused the latest round of weapons shipments to Ukraine — and that he didn’t approve the move.

The pause, reportedly ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth without notifying the White House, triggered confusion within the administration and backlash from Congress and Ukrainian officials.

At a Cabinet meeting Tuesday, Trump was asked whether he signed off on the halt. “I don’t know, why don’t you tell me?” he responded. He insisted the U.S. would continue supplying defensive weapons to Ukraine.

CNN reports this is the second time this year Hegseth paused shipments without advance notice. The first incident in February was quickly reversed. On Monday night, Trump announced the latest shipment would resume, effectively overruling Hegseth’s decision.

The pause came after Trump asked for a review of U.S. weapons stockpiles during a NATO summit, amid rising tensions in the Middle East. He reportedly wants to ensure U.S. forces have adequate munitions if conflict escalates.

Hegseth, meanwhile, has been active on other fronts — loosening drone development policies and calling for stronger defenses against China.

Still, the Ukraine shipment pause exposed internal friction, and Trump appears increasingly wary of handing any political win to Russia or President Putin.
