Russia’s only aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, may soon be scrapped after years of stalled repairs and serious accidents.

The warship, commissioned in the early 1990s, has been under repair since 2017 but remains incomplete. A major fire in 2019 and repeated delays have plagued the effort, and sources say work on the vessel was quietly halted some time ago. A final decision on whether to continue or dismantle it is expected soon from Russia’s Navy and United Shipbuilding Corporation.

If scrapped, Russia would be left without a carrier, widening the gap between its navy and those of NATO and China.
