MEXC had an X Space with @AptosLabs / @shelbyserves team a few hours ago, and it was an insightful one. There was a story shared on how all this began, and the purpose of Shelby. I've written down the main summary to make it easier for you.

------

@AveryChing has worked on data infrastructure for the first seven years at Facebook, and projects similar to Shelby were developed to process over XXX exabytes of data per day.

@sherry_apt has previously worked on handling data at Instagram.

Shelby is trying to provide a decentralized AWS for the space. When considering the storage protocols currently available, both Web2 and Web3 solutions serve as backups for your data. They are archived on the servers with the hope that they won't be requested in real-time. None of those protocols exist to support the infrastructure needed to build products with large data bandwidth requirements in real-time, such as those used in streaming and gaming. Shelby is there to serve that purpose and fill the gap, while also incentivizing read-access to the data and attempting to disrupt the business models of traditional web2 storage solutions, such as AWS S3.

Decentralized YouTube, or Decentralized TikTok, is something Shelby is looking to help with. The creators lack control in today's systems and environments, and the policies from those platforms are constantly changing. The algorithms are also continually evolving, and with Shelby and the platforms here, creators will have access to and control over them.

@jump_ is an investor in Aptos. Aptos Labs met with the Jump team in January, and the two teams discussed the things they are excited about. One of the topics they discussed was the need for decentralized cloud storage, and it turns out that Jump has been considering the same idea. Hence, it made sense for the two teams to work together; for the past six months, Aptos Labs and Jump have been collaborating to design the most effective and efficient storage system for building this out.

Also, the backgrounds of both the teams match a bit, and there's a lot of commonalties on how they think about how high performance system designs are computing and also building things that are going to scale to immense needs and also Jump's background is in building some of the most high performance systems out there. They're one of the biggest creators in the web3 space. Aptos team members' background is in building extensive data infrastructure within Facebook and Meta.

Jump is essentially building the storage solution for Shelby. At the same time, Aptos Labs will focus on implementing smart contracts to integrate Aptos into this equation, aiming to deliver the best decentralized cloud storage at a large scale.

Use cases for Shelby.

Sherry shares that she would like to see Instagram and TikTok-like apps built in a decentralized way. Not only that, but something like Blizzard's games and their in-game content can also be hosted (for example) and served by Shelby, including streaming games and hosting in-game content, which requires large-scale bandwidth.

Avery mentioned that all the early partners of Shelby have different use cases, such as Metaplex being for NFTs and Story Protocol being deeply involved in AI and data licensing, for example. Data is poised to become the next tradable asset or trading venue, and Shelby will be able to provide the necessary infrastructure to support this.

There were several other discussions as well, but this was the main one. If you still want to hear, go check the Space:
