Lawyers for Liberty has called on Anwar Ibrahim to address claims that former chief justice Tengku Maimun was denied an extension due to remarks calling for the removal of the PM's role in judicial appointments.

"As head of the judiciary, it was Tengku Maimun's duty to defend judicial independence. How can that be made the reason not to extend?

"If that is the reason, then it is a betrayal of the public interest," LFL co-founder Latheefa Koya told Malaysiakini.
