An international team of astronomers, led by the University of Galway, has captured one of the most detailed images of a planet forming in real time. The gas giant, several times more massive than Jupiter, is shaping a spectacular system of spirals and rings within a young star’s disk.

Observed with the Very Large Telescope in Chile, the disk spans XXX times the Earth-Sun distance—large enough to engulf our entire solar system. The structures closely match theoretical models of planet formation, making this a rare and significant confirmation of long-standing predictions.

The findings were published in *Astronomy & Astrophysics* (DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/202451647).
