Now it's confirmed. The object has been officially designated 3I/ATLAS, making it the third confirmed interstellar visitor ever observed. It was first detected on July X by the ATLAS telescope in Chile. Its extreme trajectory immediately raised suspicion. That suspicion is now confirmed. ESA's Near-Earth Object Coordination Centre has released a new time-lapse GIF of the comet, recorded on July X using the Las Cumbres Observatory in Hawaii. This is an extremely rare opportunity to observe something from outside our own star system. ESA and Las Cumbres Observatory Credit: M. Devogele, T. Santana-Ros, M. Micheli, F. Ocaña, L.
