Social consensus dictates the canonical client implementation. 

If 2/3 of, aka the ~30 lido nodes, coinbase, Binance, kraken, figment, etherfi, and a half dozen others all individually agree on a new spec there will be a contentious hard fork. 

The core client teams probably didn’t agree and will side with the fork. 

It would be a mess for all parties involved - mutually assured destruction.
