$GRIN: The Invisible Coin of the Peverells ⚡️ツ

In a quiet wing of the vast digital library, a whisper of an ancient spell echoed: Mimblewimble. A powerful enchantment, capable of concealing its creators while unveiling truths. It rendered transactions invisible, erasing traces with Pedersen commitments, casting transactional shadows through CoinJoin, and vanishing intermediaries with the spell of cut-through. It was a new alchemy of currency.

Its creator, a wizard known as Tom Elvis Jedusor, appeared but once. On a hidden Tor server, he left an enigmatic scroll, technical and captivating, promising absolute privacy. His work was brilliant but incomplete, like a spell awaiting a master.

Then a new sorcerer emerged.

On October 20, 2016, a figure cloaked in mystery appeared in the #bitcoin-wizards IRC channel. His name: Ignotus Peverell, perhaps an heir to the legendary Invisibility Cloak, perhaps merely a wizard drawn to secrets. With discretion and mastery, he unveiled his creation: Grin, a magical project built upon the pillars of Mimblewimble.

Ignotus sought neither Gringotts’ gold nor fame in the Daily Prophet. His purpose was pure: a fair currency, free of ICOs, pre-mining, or founders’ rewards. Grin would belong to the community, sustained by donations, guarded by ideas, and forged freely.

Other mysterious names joined him—Antioch Peverell, Yeastplume—wizards dedicated to shielding the project from the dark forces of centralization and greed.

In June 2019, Ignotus departed silently, as if draped in his Invisibility Cloak. The community felt his absence, but Grin remained strong, guided by a Technical Council of volunteer wizards.

Before leaving, Ignotus left a message: Grin would be a currency for transactions, not a treasure for collectors. He rejected the myth of Bitcoin’s absolute scarcity, favoring fluidity and the right of all to transact freely.

His legacy endures in eight public repositories in the realm of GitHubland, untouched since his departure. Perhaps Ignotus lingers beneath his cloak, ready to return when the right moment arrives.

Philosophy - Grin
by Ignotus Peverel

Grin likes itself small and easy on the eyes. It wants to be inclusive and welcoming for all walks of life, without judgement. Grin is terribly ambitious, but not at the detriment of others, rather to further us all. It may have strong opinions to stay in line with its objectives, which doesn't mean disrespect of others' ideas.

We believe in pull requests, data and scientific research. We do not believe in unfounded beliefs.
