Today’s chips are hitting limits on how small and fast they can go, but this new material changes instantly, which is exactly what’s needed for super-fast electronics. Physicist Gregory Fiete: “There’s nothing faster than light, and we’re using light to control material properties at the fastest possible speed physics allows.” The new method works at normal temperatures and keeps the material stable for months by heating and cooling it very quickly, a trick called “thermal quenching.” It’s still a long way from being inside your gadgets, but scientists say this could replace silicon in the future and finally kill those annoying loading screens.
