Hansi Flick pays tribute to Hermann Gerland following the latter's retirement:

"Hermann Gerland is an extraordinary person and an outstanding coach – in many ways. When it comes to recognizing talent, there's no one who can hold a candle to him. Equally unique is his ability not only to discover young players, but also to vigorously nurture and sustainably develop them. German football has benefited significantly from these qualities for many years – and will now sorely miss them - like so many other things

For me personally, it was an honor and a true privilege to work with this great man and excellent football expert. Hermann was brutally honest, open, and direct – not only with the players, but also with me as head coach. Hierarchies meant little to him, and big names even less. He was always and exclusively concerned with the matter at hand – the game, the team, and success

With his retirement, a truly great man leaves the stage of German football. Someone who remained in the background yet played a decisive role in almost all of the major successes of recent history. I take my hat off to his character, his values, and his achievements. I sincerely wish him, and especially his family, all the best for his retirement."
