I watched the new Superman movie last night, and a huge driving factor behind the plot is a USA backed state (Boravia) committing war crimes in the middle east on a defenseless state (Jarhanpur). The movie starts with Superman facing public and political backlash for coming to the aid of the Jarhanpurians.
