They Burned the Archives but not the memory : In January 1961. A haunting photograph of Congo's first Prime Minister, Patrice Emery Lumumba, being transported as a prisoner, humiliated, beaten, and paraded barefoot by Belgian-backed forces.

Just days later, on XX January 1961, he would be brutally executed in Katanga with the complicity of Belgium, the UK, and the USA.
His body was hacked into pieces and dissolved in acid to erase all trace of his struggle for Congo's independence.

This image is a stark reminder of the price Africa paid for freedom, and the foreign hands that crushed its early dreams of self-rule.

We're sharing this photo to bring African history back to light. They tried to burn the archives, but they could not burn the memories. Our history must be told.

This photo of Patrice Lumumba is a testament to what African leaders endured in the hands of neocolonizers. We will not forget. We will not stay silent. We will keep telling these stories so the next generation knows what was taken, what was fought for, and what must never be repeated.
