Schmitz was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. His defense argued that he acted in a state of “emotional distress” triggered by humiliation from the TV show and the note (“gay panic” defense). In 1996, he was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 25–50 years in prison.

After an appeal based on jury instructions, he was retried in 1999, again convicted of second-degree murder, and received the same sentence.

Scott Amedure’s family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit against The Jenny Jones Show, arguing they were negligent and had provoked violence. In 1999, a jury awarded $XX million, but this was overturned in 2002 by the Michigan Court of Appeals, which ruled the show could not reasonably foresee the killing.

Schmitz served XX years and was granted parole on August 22, 2017. He has since remained out of public view.
