Jeff Bezos–backed EV startup Slate Auto may be the latest casualty of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill,” which eliminates the $XXXXX federal EV tax credit.

Slate, known for its minimalist, customizable electric pickup truck that can transform into an SUV, initially promoted a sub-$20,000 price tag—including the credit. Now, with the incentive ending, the real price is expected to start closer to $25,000, with customized models potentially reaching $30,000–$40,000.

This shift erodes one of Slate’s biggest selling points: affordability. While still cheaper than Tesla’s Cybertruck or Ford’s F-150 Lightning, losing the tax credit may dull the appeal.

The bill impacts all EV makers, but analysts note that Tesla may feel it more than others, despite Elon Musk saying he supports ending the credit.

Slate, which logged XXXXXXX reservations in two weeks, will still launch in 2026, with $XX refundable preorders. But its promise of a $20K EV now looks far less likely.

Despite Bezos and Trump maintaining a friendly relationship—Bezos even invited Trump to his wedding—the bill could end up hurting the billionaire’s high-profile EV venture.
