XX dead, more feared. A well-designed bridge should have a planned 'end of life strategy' long before it reaches the point of collapse, which includes decommissioning, dismantling, and replacement if the location still needs a bridge. In India, collapse too often ends up being the default ‘end-of-life strategy.’ If a bridge falls before it’s properly decommissioned, without valid reasons like catastrophic floods or earthquakes, it’s nothing but an administrative failure.
