Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said he plans to meet with his Chinese counterpart in the coming weeks, aiming to advance U.S.-China trade discussions. The announcement comes as former President Donald Trump ramps up pressure on China with aggressive new tariff threats.

In a CNBC interview Monday, Bessent said past meetings in Geneva and London were “respectful” and left room for deeper cooperation beyond trade. He suggested that future talks may touch on broader economic collaboration — if China is willing.

The talks follow Trump’s announcement of a potential XX% tariff on countries aligning with BRICS anti-U.S. policies. His team has already issued “take it or leave it” letters to XX nations outlining new tariffs — with some levies reaching as high as 70%.

While most countries await final terms by July 9, the UK has secured a preferential deal — with auto and aerospace tariffs significantly reduced.

These developments are happening as the Federal Reserve expresses concern that steep tariffs could reignite inflation, complicating future rate cuts. At the same time, U.S.-China tensions remain high over issues like semiconductor exports and TikTok’s ownership.
