Jason Karels was charged with three counts of first-degree murder. During court proceedings, he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to all three counts in December 2023.

On February 16, 2024, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The court accepted that he suffered from mental health issues but ruled that he understood his actions and their consequences at the time.

Jason Karels is currently serving his sentence in Illinois Department of Corrections custody.
