New JAMA article paints a dark picture re the health of babies & adolescence in the US compared to other XX developed countries (OCED18)!

Higher rates of mortality & chronic conditions!

Concerning multiyear trends that worsened during  2021-2023!

Radically different public health policies are needed! 

"From 2007-2008 to 2021-2023, childhood obesity rates for 2- to 19-year-old individuals significantly increased from XXXX% to XXXX% (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.23-1.23]) (Figure 5). Early onset of menstruation (before XX years of age) rose from XXX% in 2007-2008 to XXXX% in 2021-2023 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.63-1.64]), while trouble sleeping for 16- to 17-year-old individuals increased from XXX% in 2007-2008 to XXXX% in 2017-2020 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.80-1.81]). Limitations in activity due to a chronic disease rose from XXX% in 2008-2009 to XXX% in 2018 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.13-1.29])."  

"Annual rates of XX physical symptoms diagnosed by physicians were examined, e.g., abdominal pain, fatigue, cough, and constipation (Figure 5). In 2010, XXXX% of 5- to 17-year-old individuals experienced at least X physical symptom rising to XXXX% by 2023 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.39-1.40]); XX of the XX symptoms significantly increased by XX% or more over the time period. The X symptom categories with the largest increases were dermatological symptoms (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 4.70-5.00]), pain (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 3.58-3.77]), and menstrual disorders (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 2.90-3.08])."

"Depressive symptoms (feeling sad or hopeless) significantly increased from XXXX% of 9th to 12th graders in 2009 to XXXX% in 2023 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.46-1.57]). Loneliness feelings (feeling alone) among 12- to 18-year-old individuals significantly rose from XXXX% in 2007 to XXXX% in 2021 (RR, XXXX [95% CI, 1.48-1.57]) (Figure 5)."
