This has given me a rather unique world view - namely that national identity is mostly cope and most “cultural differences” are just surface-level aesthetic variations on the same underlying human neuroses. Everyone thinks their local dysfunction is special but it’s really just different flavors of the same basic inability to process reality without elaborate social fictions. portuguese melancholy hits different than estonian melancholy but it’s still just melancholy, you know?
