Tornado Cash Sanctions Dispute Settled as U.S. Appeals Court Approves Dismissal

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit has approved a joint motion by the Treasury Department and @coincenter to dismiss the case over sanctions against @TornadoCash, officially ending a nearly two-year legal battle. Coin Center Executive Director @valkenburgh stated that the Treasury’s decision not to proceed means it is no longer defending its “dangerously overbroad interpretation” of sanctions law. In August 2022, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned the crypto mixer Tornado Cash, barring U.S. entities and individuals from transacting with it, before lifting the sanctions this March.

In the dismissal filing, the government noted the appeal had become “moot.”
