đź‘€ $PLTR Co-founders @peterthiel & @JTLonsdale to launch crypto-focused bank, Erebor, aiming to be the 'alternative' to Silicon Valley Bank

Erebor Bank is a digital-first financial institution launched in July 2025, aiming to fill the void left by Silicon Valley Bank's collapse in 2023. Backed by tech billionaires Palmer Luckey (founder of Oculus and Anduril), Joe Lonsdale (co-founder of Palantir and founder of 8VC), and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund, it targets startups and high-net-worth individuals in innovative sectors like cryptocurrency, artificial intelligence, defense, and advanced manufacturing. The bank has applied for a U.S. national bank charter and plans to operate without physical branches, offering services through digital platforms.

Focus on Underserved Sectors: Erebor serves tech startups, crypto firms, and individuals who work for or invest in these industries, addressing gaps left by traditional banks reluctant to engage with high-risk sectors. It aims to provide traditional banking products (e.g., loans, deposits, payroll) alongside virtual currency-related services.

Stablecoin Integration: A major differentiator is its emphasis on stablecoins—digital assets pegged to fiat currencies like the U.S. dollar. Erebor plans to hold stablecoins on its balance sheet, aiming to be “the most regulated entity conducting and facilitating stablecoin transactions,” aligning with evolving U.S. regulations.

Digital-Only Model: Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, with a secondary office in New York, Erebor operates entirely online, offering 24/7 access to funds via blockchain technology for faster, secure transactions.

Conservative Financial Strategy: To ensure liquidity, Erebor proposes a low loan-to-deposit ratio (potentially XX% or less), avoiding the risky lending practices that led to SVB’s downfall.

Regulatory Compliance: The bank emphasizes strict adherence to U.S. financial regulations, positioning itself as a trusted intermediary for institutional investors wary of unregulated crypto platforms.

Like Anduril and Palantir, Erebor takes its name from J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" series. In the books, Erebor is the "Lonely Mountain", a fortress whose treasures are reclaimed from the dragon Smaug.
