Every year is divided in two parts.
First part is when Sun enters into Capricorn to Cancer, when days are longer. When Sun enters the darker side of the year which is from Cancer to Capricorn, days are shorter and this Dakshinayan belongs to Daityas (demons).
The warmer and brighter part of the year belongs to Adityas.
Hence, when Sun in Daskshinayan, it is the time when people observe more fasts, abstain from non-vegetarian food and alcohol, and seek the blessings of God. We all know about Chaturmasya Vrat.

The four months of Dakshinayan when Earth gets submerged in water due to monsoon is called yearly Pralay of our materialistic earth.
During these four months of earthily Pralay, Narayan sleeps and the earth goes infertile.
Humans on earth are prohibited to celebrate marriage, or any auspicious events during these four months.
We celebrate number of festivals during these four months – starting with Nag Panchami, Krishna Janmashtami, Raksha Bandhan, Ganesh utsav.
After that, earth gets rejuvenated and fertile just like Ardra Nakshatra does in our life.
Narayan, means the one who stays on water (Nara), sleeps on 11th day of brighter side of Moon in the month of Ashad. Which is celebrated as Dev shayani Ekadashi.
He wakes up on another Ekadashi tithi called Prabodhini Ekadashi and he returns to Vaikuntha.
According to Padma Purana, the feminine energy of Vishnu slayed the demon names β€˜Muran’. This happened on the eleventh day of the month during the sun’s journey within the Dhanu Rashi. Impressed by the act, Vishnu names her as β€˜Ekadashi’ and offers her the boon that those that worship β€˜Ekadashi’ on the day of her victory over Muran would reach β€˜Vaikunth’ (Vishnu’s abode).

But why is Vishnu sleeping? Why is he not taking part in the world he has made? To understand this we must understand the story of creation, as told in the Puranas. Creation does not happen only once. As the cycle of seasons endlessly repeats itself, Vishnu creates the world of matter and withdraws it into his existence time after time.
It is Yog Nidra (sleeping in samadhi). He is more awakened while seemingly asleep. Although Vishnu is sleeping in the ocean of creation, he is not unaware of the actions of all the tiny souls (humans). In their hearts he is following them (like wifi) as they journey through the vastness of time and space. Waiting, watching.

According to Bhagavat Gita, the oceans are Vishnu’s waist, the hills and mountains are his bones, the clouds are the hairs on his head and the air is his breathing. The rivers are his veins, the trees are the hairs on his body, the sun and moon are his two eyes and the passage of day and night is the moving of his eyelids.

When we see the sunrise and feel its scorching heat, when we taste water or smell the earth in the monsoon rains, all these reminded us of Vishnu. Vishnu is both inside it and outside this world, and it cannot be separated from him. All is sacred, God-given and mystically created. It all came from Vishnu and it will all return to him at the end.
