In a 2015 interview, shortly after Facebook acquired Oculus, he said the next major leap in computing would be one based on vision—letting users interact with digital experiences in a more natural, immersive way. Since then, Meta has invested heavily in this vision, rebranding itself in 2021 to reflect its commitment to the metaverse. But despite billions spent, progress has been slower than anticipated. Meta’s Quest headsets—especially the more affordable Quest X and Quest 3S—have gained traction for gaming and entertainment, but they haven’t replaced mobile devices. The $XXX Quest Pro was discontinued after poor sales, and even as Reality Labs generated $XXX million in Q1 2025, it posted a $XXX billion loss. Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have seen stronger demand, becoming top sellers in EMEA markets. However, they currently lack visual displays. A third-gen model is reportedly in development, potentially adding augmented reality features. Competition is heating up. Apple’s $XXXXX Vision Pro launched in 2024, while Google and Samsung are developing their own mixed-reality headset. Zuckerberg’s vision isn’t dead—but replacing the smartphone is proving far harder than predicted.
