Is this a hidden tax on the people?

Yes — and quite a sneaky one at that.

Here’s how it works:

X. Government collects RM7 billion in back taxes from TNB
 • On paper, it looks like a tax win.
 • But remember: TNB is not some profit-guzzling private company. It’s a GLC with massive public shareholding — including:
 • EPF (your retirement savings)
 • PNB/ASB/ASM
 • KWAP
 • Tabung Haji
 • And millions of unit trust holders

So when TNB pays billions in taxes, dividends drop and share prices weaken — meaning the people pay indirectly through lower returns.

X. TNB compensates by raising tariffs
 • Confirmed: Base electricity tariff increases XXXX% starting X July 2025
 • While domestic users may be shielded temporarily, industries and businesses bear the cost.
 • But businesses will pass that cost on — in higher prices for goods, services, food, transport, etc.
 • In the end? Rakyat still pays — just not through an obvious tax bill.

⸻

So yes:

This is a hidden tax.
Not labelled as “GST” or “income tax,” but extracted through:
 • Higher utility bills
 • Lower dividends on rakyat-held funds
 • More expensive daily necessities

It’s a masterclass in fiscal sleight of hand:
Take money from a rakyat-owned company via LHDN, then approve tariff hikes so that same rakyat company can claw it back — from the people.
