So maybe AI isn’t frying our brains. Or maybe we’re just really bad at proving it. Either way, if we’re in a cognitive apocalypse, this study isn’t the smoking gun. A buzzy MIT study claimed ChatGPT users showed less brain activity while writing - cue the headlines screaming “AI is making us stupid.”
Except…the study isn’t peer-reviewed, the sample size is tiny, and the authors literally begged journalists not to use words like “dumb” or “brain rot.”
They measured “neural connectivity” with EEGs - not exactly a gold standard for deep cognition.
So maybe AI isn’t frying our brains. Or maybe we’re just really bad at proving it.
Either way, if we’re in a cognitive apocalypse, this study isn’t the smoking gun.
